Library workshops for taught postgraduates

Once the exams are over, many taught postgraduate students will be turning their attention to their dissertations or projects and the Library is here to help you with a series of workshops that cover the research process from choosing where and how to search for high quality sources to ensuring that your referencing is as good as it can be.

There are three workshops on offer and they will be taking place from the 20th to the 22nd of May. We call them Information Skills Refreshers as they aim to remind you of the best ways to use our resources and services as you embark on such a large piece of work. The three workshops are:

  • Part 1 – Starting your dissertation research. Covers planning, using Primo to find print and electronic books and how to get the best out of search engines such as Google
  • Part 2 – Going further with your dissertation research. Covers how to identify, access and use the most suitable academic databases to find research level material in your subject. Also introduces RefWorks, a software to help you manage your references and write your dissertation or project.
  • Part 3 – Managing your dissertation research. Carries on from Part 2, going into more detail on referencing and using RefWorks, as well as touching on how best to avoid possible accusations of plagiarism.

PLEASE NOTE: RefWorks is of limited use to those using Footnote referencing styles, such as OSCOLA.  Subject specialists from the library will be on hand to give support and advice.

Did you know that there are 7 Silent Study Rooms in The Sir Duncan Rice Library?

There are Silent Study Rooms on Floors 3 to 6 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library, all located on the south side of the building. If you are looking to work somewhere quiet using your personal electronic device, you can go to any of the Silent Study Rooms on floors 3, 4 and 5.

The Silent Study Rooms, overlooking Bedford Road, also include the recently installed power sockets with USB charging points! Please note that the Silent Study Room on floor 6 is a strictly silent working environment where no electronic devices are allowed, for those who need no disturbance.

Please remember that food consumption is prohibited in all Silent Study Rooms. 

Library users can take cold food and cold/hot drinks (as long as they are in a covered container) past the gates in all library buildings.

You will find that there are many areas within the libraries where you can eat and drink, but please respect your fellow library users and help us maintain a clean and tidy environment by:

  Cleaning up after yourselves

  Using the appropriate bins provided (general waste/mixed recyclables)

To maintain a pleasant study environment please observe the following restrictions:

   No hot food is allowed anywhere in the libraries

   No smelly or noisy cold food

 No food in silent study areas, project rooms, as well as rooms or areas with equipment (PC Classrooms, PC Clusters, Co-Labs, Flexible Learning Area, Microform Room, Multimedia Room, Music Resources Room, and Viewing Room)

Maths drop-in sessions for exam preparation in The Sir Duncan Rice Library

Dr Morgiane Richard of the University’s Student Learning Service (SLS) will be holding Maths drop-in sessions in The Sir Duncan Rice Library this week, to help with any mathematics issues you may have.

You will be able to find her on Floor 5 of the library, room 506. There is no need to book, just drop in with your questions.

Dr Richard will be available at the following times:

  • Wednesday 24 April, 12:00 – 14:00
  • Thursday 25 April, 12:00 – 14:00
  • Friday 26 April, 12:00 – 14:00

Noise in the library: how to let us know if you are being disturbed

We ask all users of The Sir Duncan Rice Library to be considerate to others studying and focusing upon exam revision. Exams can be a time of stress so, please think of other library users as you revise and while you move around the building. As you walk out of the library, remember that people sat in their seats are still working.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library provides a range of spaces for different types of use, from completely silent to more informal group working areas. In general, the library gets quieter as you move up the floors, with floor 7 being the quietest. It is also noisier near the lifts but gets quieter as you move across to the south side of the building.

During this important time, we try to ensure that a quiet, safe and clean study environment is in place for all users.  Please remember that if you are being disturbed by others using the library, you can speak to library staff. You can find us in the offices and at information points on Floors 1-6 Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00. All other times speak with members of staff at the Information Centre on Floor 1 and on the Welcome Desk.

Walk-In Users service

Did you know that the Library offers a Walk-In Users service, which allows members of the public to access electronic resources where licensing conditions permit? There are dedicated computer terminals located on Floor 1 and 2 of the Sir Duncan Rice Library.  There is no access off-campus.

This service is only available when library staff are on duty and you are expected to do the searching yourself. Printing is not possible so bring your own memory stick to download material within copyright regulations.

How to use this service

To register for the service, please visit The Sir Duncan Rice Library. You will need to provide photographic ID e.g. passport and verification of your address e.g. utility bill.  You will be asked to read and sign Terms and Conditions and complete a registration form.  An access pass will be issued and this, along with the membership, is renewable.

To use the service, please go to the Information Desk on the First Floor to sign in and you will be issued with a Smartcard to operate the dedicated Walk-In Users PCs.

What is available?

Access to many of the Library’s extensive range of full-text and bibliographic databases is available. Availability and access varies and please be aware that access is subject to strict licensing permissions and copyright law.  The databases and e-journals are organised under the following headings:

  • Cross Disciplinary
  • Business, Law and Social Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Sciences

Help screens are available and many of the resources have tutorials.

Potential noise disturbance in The Sir Duncan Rice Library – Tuesday 19 & Wednesday 20 March

There will be vital work carried out on the roof of The Sir Duncan Rice Library on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th of March 2019 and we would like to apologise in advance for any noise resulting from the work.

The disturbance, if any, will be most noticeable on Floors 6 and 7. Alternatively, the Taylor Library is also open on the Old Aberdeen campus.

We apologise for the disturbance and any inconvenience caused.

Information Skills workshops for PhD researchers : places still available

The Library is here to help all postgraduate researchers as they begin, or continue their in-depth research, with a short series of Information Skills workshops designed to their needs. With so much academic literature available through the University of Aberdeen, these workshops will give you the confidence and skills to locate and manage the materials you need.

The workshops will take place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of February and will help you understand the resources available to you as researchers here at the University of Aberdeen, and how to get the best out of them.

There are three workshops on offer, each lasting two hours:

  • Literature searching – Part 1: Getting started
  • Literature searching – Part 2: Using databases
  • Literature searching – Part 3: Managing your references using RefWorks*

Across the three workshops we will look at:

  • Planning your search
  • Looking for books: using Primo and e-books
  • Databases of academic literature
  • Getting the best out of Google
  • Managing your references with RefWorks
  • Formatting Word documents with in-text citations and bibliographies

*IMPORTANT NOTE: The workshop focusing on the management of references

(Part 3) is not suitable for research postgraduates in the School of Law, as the software used does not support the OSCOLA referencing style required for legal theses.
