Worried about library books being due back?

We can reassure you that you don’t need to worry about returning your library books during the lockdown period.

Your books will be automatically renewed while the library buildings are closed.

So, holding on to your books for now will not incur fines or stop you from graduating.

Returning books would probably involve non-essential travel, which doesn’t comply with Scottish Government guidance.

We’ll get in touch via University email to update you once the situation changes.

If you have any questions, please contact library staff, who will be happy to help, or check out our website for the latest information on your Library services.

How do I return books?

Did you know the quickest and easiest way to return library books is at the Returns Room through the self-return machines? You will find the Returns Room on the Ground Floor of the Sir Duncan Rice Library.

It’s as simple as placing the books through the slot one by one. As soon as they have passed through they are removed from your borrowing record.

You will also find an external slot on the right-hand side of the entrance to the Library. This means that you can return your library books anytime – 24/7!

Don’t forget to take your receipt as proof of your returned items.

Forgotten your student card? Don’t worry! You don’t need your student card to return books.

Heavy Demand books can be returned in the Heavy Demand Area on Floor 1 (using the self-issue/returns machine) or at the Returns Room.

You will find a video tutorial on how to use the self-return machine on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcoZduPANjc&feature=youtu.be

Users can borrow, check their borrower record and renew items on loan, using the self-service machines on the Ground Floor and on Floors 1, 4 & 6.

To issue a book:

  • select “Borrow”
  • simply scan your ID card on the reader (place it under the red beam)
  • type in your PIN. If you don’t have a PIN, ask staff to register one for you
  • place the book on the shelf (the message: “place your items on the shelf below” will be displayed on the screen)
  • select method for obtaining receipt (print or email)

To return items on loan, use the self-service kiosks on Floor 1 (Heavy Demand area) or the Returns Room, located on the Ground Floor of The Sir Duncan Rice Library. There is also an external book drop slot where you can return items when the Library is closed.
