A message from our new Librarian

Diane Bruxvoort, University Librarian, and Director

Hello everyone, my name is Diane Bruxvoort and I am excited to say that I’m the incoming University Librarian at the University of Aberdeen.  I’ve been asked to introduce myself (briefly), so I’ll try to hit the highlights. I’ve been an Associate Dean at the University of Florida (UF) since 2010 with responsibility for public services and collections at two large and two small libraries. I also oversee special collections, exhibits, digital services, acquisitions, and cataloging, and serve as the Dean’s deputy.

Before UF I worked at the University of Houston (UH) for ten years moving up from Head of Access Services to Associate Dean.  At UH I was deeply and happily involved with the addition and renovation of the main library.

In my pre-academic library career I worked at the Harris County and Houston City Public Library systems for seventeen years combined. These years serving the community from the cradle to old age gave me an appreciation for lifelong learning that continues today. I have a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin and earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Iowa.  I am currently working on a doctorate in Higher Education Administration and will reach the dissertation stage this year.

On a personal note, I have a son, a daughter-in-law, a daughter and a grandson (Mike, Kelly, Cassandra, and Xavier), no pets, an extended family in Iowa (farmers, of course) and friends across the country.  I look forward to getting to know the Aberdeen library community and being able to say that I have friends around the world.  See you soon!  Diane.

SURVEY: Students and Staff – Please…Follow That Link!

Library, Special Collections and Museums would like your views on the library, special collections and museums services and facilities that we provide for staff at the University.   By the end of today (Thursday 18 April) all staff and students will have received an email containing your own direct link to the survey. Please look out for that email, follow the link and complete the Survey!

Requiring less than 10 minutes of your time the Survey is short, targets key areas and also provides space for you to comment on matters that are important to you, and for us, in developing our services and facilities to support your research, teaching and learning needs.

We will use the information you provide to identify and, where possible, address common issues that are raised. Your feedback will also inform the development of our next Strategic Plan and will help define our priorities for the future.

Thank you for your time in helping with this.

REMINDER: Library services – service outage planned for 13 & 14 December

Due to the Data Refurbishment Project there will be planned IT system downtime on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 December. Many library services will be unavailable at that time through the normal routes e.g. self-issue machines, Primo, the library catalogue, past exam papers. However, all libraries will be open and it will still be possible to access and use the majority of library services – just in in a different way! Specific details can be found on our website.

As mentioned in the original information on the outage, if you are planning to return library material before leaving for the Christmas vacation we’d recommend doing this today (Wednesday 12 December), if possible.

Library and IT staff are working to ensure as little disruption as possible. If you have any queries please email libnotice@abdn.ac.uk or contact 01224 273330.

Normal service is scheduled to resume on Saturday 15 December with a one hour period of downtime planned for 18.00-19.00 on Monday 17 December.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: disruption to LSC&M electronic services

Due to the scheduled IT service outages as part of the Data Centre refurbishment project, the majority of electronic services will not be available in any library buildings on 13-14 December, although all sites will be open as usual. Access to some online resources will also be affected on these days. Please be aware that this includes all self-issue machines, Primo, the library catalogue, and other digital items such as exam papers. It will still be possible to borrow books, find library material using COPAC, and link directly to e-journals and other e-resources using the Subject A-Z lists or Virtual Aberdeen.

Specific details of library services affected can be found on our website. If you urgently need to request materials for loan before the end of term, please do so by Monday 10 December. If you are planning to return library material before you leave for Christmas vacation we recommend you do so by Wednesday 12 December.

We’re working to minimise disruption, so if you have specific queries about how the outages will affect your library work, and what we can do to help, please email libnotice@abdn.ac.uk or contact 01224 273330 in advance.

Normal service is planned to resume on Saturday 15 December.
