Did you know…? – Taking library books abroad

Did you know how to seek permission to take library books abroad?

You may need to take library books out of the country so that you can continue reading during your vacation. For items from The Sir Duncan Rice Library, please speak to a member of the Subject & Enquiry team. Staff can be found in the offices on floors 4-6.

It is best to go to the office closest to where the book is from – for example, for books on arts & humanities go to the Floor 4 office, for sciences go to the Floor 5 office, for social sciences & divinity go to the Floor 6 office. For books from Taylor (Law) or Medical libraries, please visit the branch and talk to staff on the issue desk.

You will be asked to fill out a short request form. The staff member will check that the books are suitable for taking abroad and finish filling out the form with you.

Please note that items are still subject to recall even when out of the country. If a book is recalled from you while abroad, you will need to post the book back to us. Make sure you check your University email regularly to avoid any fines.

It’s as simple as that! Please do get in contact if you have any further questions.

Library service update

View of The Sir Duncan Rice Library from Elphinstone Road

We’ve made some important changes in response to new Covid-19 restrictions in mainland Scotland. Please take some time to review the changes before you visit.

  • The Sir Duncan Rice Library (TSDRL) will be open 10:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday from Monday 11 January. The Medical and Taylor libraries will open at a later date when it is safe to do so.
  • There will be access to a limited number of study spaces in TSDRL however we ask that you use these spaces only if you have no other suitable study space available to you.
  • Books are only available on our Click and Collect Service and cannot be accessed freely on the shelves. (This is a Scottish Government requirement)
Please wear your face covering at all times. Please display your lanyard or show your exemption card if you are unable to wear a face covering.

We recognise the enormous value of the Library to our students and are working extremely hard to offer you Library services during this challenging time. Please help us by taking care to understand the rules and only visiting in person if you have an essential need. Please check the updated FAQ later on Monday 11 January, and email library@abdn.ac.uk if you cannot find answers to your questions.

If you have queries or comments specifically about our COVID-19 measures, please get in touch with coronavirus@abdn.ac.uk.

Library Tours

Library tours

Following on from our already fully booked Library Tours, which will take place on September 2 and 3, we will be running additional short tours of The Sir Duncan Rice Library starting on Wednesday September 4 and running until Friday September 20 for all students, new and old.

Come and meet staff on the ground floor of the library at 10am or 2pm, there is no need to book. There will be no tours taking place at the weekends, but staff working then will still be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Library Service.

Speak with staff in the Taylor and Medical Libraries for help in finding your way round their collections and spaces.

Locating Library Resources

You can search Primo, to find out what materials the Library has on the shelves and online. Primo is the first place to begin any searching you may be doing for books, ebooks, journal articles or any of the other high-quality resources available to you. Also, be sure to check out our Primo Library Guide, as well as our short videos on using Primo

Getting help in our libraries

Library staff are here to help you locate the materials you need or answer any questions you may have about our service.

Staff are available Monday-Friday, 09.00-17.00, in each of our three libraries to help in person. There is a reduced service at all three sites outwith these hours, but staff are still available to help.

For general enquiries within The Sir Duncan Rice Library about our services please speak with staff at the Information Centre on Floor 1.

For more subject-specific assistance in The Sir Duncan Rice Library you will find staff with knowledge of the collections on Floors 4-6. They will either be based at the clearly marked Information Points, or they will be available to help in the Enquiry Offices which are located right beside them. More details on staff help available here.

The Taylor Library and the Medical Library also have very knowledgeable staff happy to field any enquiries you may have about their collections. Please come and speak to them.

We are here to help you find the library materials you need throughout your time here at the University of Aberdeen and are ready and waiting for your questions. And don’t ever be embarrassed to ask us a question because you think it might be a silly question. There are no silly questions, only questions, and we love to hear them all.

Remember to visit our website, and follow us on Twitter and Facebook, as well as keep up to date with any Library news on this blog.

Welcome information: ID cards

Your ID card is your Library card

All registered students and staff of the University of Aberdeen are entitled to free membership of the Library. Details of borrowing entitlements can be found here.

Students are automatically made members of the Library when they register with the university. Your ID card is also your Library card. Remember to bring it with you every time you wish to access the Library or borrow material.

Self-service kiosks for borrowing material can be found on the Ground Floor of The Sir Duncan Rice Library, in the Heavy Demand area on Floor 1 and on Floors 4 & 6. In Taylor and Medical libraries, take the items you wish to borrow to the nearest Issue Desk together with your ID card.

We will soon publish another post with details on borrowing.

ID card pick-up locations

-New students who are staying in University accommodation: you will get your ID card when you pick up your accommodation keys. If your card is not with your keys, then you will need to collect it separately from the Infohub stall in the GP Hall at Hillhead on Saturday 31st Aug or Sunday 1st Sept between 09:30 and 16:30.

If your card isn’t ready, it could be because your photo wasn’t approved in time, was rejected or has not been uploaded yet. There will be photo upload and ID card printing facilities on site at Hillhead so ID cards will be produced on the day where needed. If you are arriving after move-in weekend and your card is not with your keys, then you will need to collect your ID card from Elphinstone Hall.

-All other new students can pick up their cards from Elphinstone Hall between 2nd Sept and 20th Sept. After this date, students should go to Infohub at 91 High Street.
There will be photo upload and ID card printing facilities on site in Elphinstone and student ambassadors on hand to produce ID cards on the day where needed. The full layout for registration services can be seen here.

-PhD students: ID card pick-up is the same for Postgraduate Research students, however, PGRs will need to visit Infohub after picking up their card so that their curriculum can be made live.

-If students need to complete a Visa check, they should do this after collecting their card in order to complete registration. Visa checks can be done at the Immigration team desk in Elphinstone Hall or at Infohub.

-Distance learners can request for their ID card to be printed and sent out by emailing infohub@abdn.ac.uk from their university email account. Make sure to include: full name, student ID number and full address including postcode.

Problems with cards

If a student card is not working then a new one can be printed almost instantly at Infohub depending on the reason. Any card that is reprinted will always take overnight to activate and there is no way to speed this up.
