Did you know…? How to return books in TSDRL

Did you know the quickest and easiest way to return library books is at the Returns Room through the self-return machines? You will find the Returns Room on the Ground Floor of the Sir Duncan Rice Library, to the right of the main entrance.

It’s as simple as placing the books through the slot one by one. They are removed from your borrowing record as soon as they have passed through. You don’t even need to use your ID card to return books this way.

You will also find an external slot on the right-hand side of the entrance to the Library. This is only available when the library is closed so you don’t need to wait for us to open to return your books! You will need your ID card to be able to use this.

Don’t forget to take your receipt as proof of your returned items.

Heavy Demand books can be returned in the Heavy Demand Area on Floor 1 (using the self-issue/returns machine), or at the Returns Room.

If you are returning books to the Taylor or Medical libraries, please take them to a member of staff at the issue desk. If you are returning them out-of-hours, please use the boxes provided.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Library Closures 2-5 June

Her Majesty The Queen is the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.

To celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the University of Aberdeen, including all library sites, will be closed from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June, inclusive.

Our libraries will reopen on Monday 6 June. Please check our Library Opening Hours here.

Using The Sir Duncan Rice Library Safely During the Pandemic

The Sir Duncan Rice Library and the Medical and Taylor Libraries are currently open for our students and staff. We are unable to provide library access to members of the public.

Remember to bring your staff/student card as access will be via swipe card at the main entrance. Card scanning at the security gates is compulsory to comply with current Government Test and Protect obligations.

Please be aware that a face covering must be worn at all times, including when seated, or display a sunflower lanyard if unable to do so.
Please maintain the 2 metre physical distancing rule whenever possible.
Sanitise hands on entry and exit and during your stay.  
Only use study spaces and PCs marked with a green tick and surfaces, PCs and MFDs should be cleaned after use with the wipes provided.
Please also remember that no food or drink, other than bottled water, is permitted anywhere within the library, except when seated in the café.
If a book from the shelf is handled but not borrowed – the quarantine trolleys on each floor next to the atrium must be used.
Follow the designated one-way routes and please remember, lifts are to be used by one person at a time, so please leave more time to move around the building.

Please only approach Library Staff who are seated behind support desk screens.

We continue to welcome all University users who have no suitable alternative study space available to them. If a user is unable to evacuate unaided, we require prior arrangement before we can allow access – please contact libnotice@abdn.ac.uk for assistance.

A Click and Collect service is available through Primo, for those who prefer not to come into the library at present. This is a next day service and is available Monday to Friday. An email notification is issued when the requested items are available for collection. You can find more information about the Click & Collect service here.

How to use the co-labs

Did you know about the 16 collaborative group study spaces (Co-labs) in SDRL?

Each of them seats between 4 and 7 people and has a PC, plasma screen, power sockets and headphone ports.

They are located on Floors 3-6 in the NW corner of the building (turn right when you come out of the lifts!). They operate on a first-come, first-served basis, but with priority for groups of 3 or more.

If your group can’t find a space, and see a co-lab being used by an individual or two people, please do feel free to come and tell library staff. We will ask the other library users to re-locate and help them find a space.

You may also like to make use of the new wireless ‘Airplay’ function, which allows you to display content from your device on the large screen. Simply press the Airplay button and follow the on-screen instructions.

How do I return books?

You will also find an external slot on the right-hand side of the entrance to the Library. This means that you can return your library books anytime – 24/7!

Don’t forget to take your receipt as proof of your returned items.

Forgotten your student card? Don’t worry! You don’t need your student card to return books.

Heavy Demand Books – a Quick Guide

So, you’ve found a book on Primo that you need to borrow and it’s in Heavy Demand. Here are some helpful hints about borrowing Heavy Demand books to get you started!

The Heavy Demand Collection is located on the first floor next to the Information Centre desk.

Heavy Demand books can be borrowed at any time and are always due back the following day at 10.30am (or on Monday if borrowed on Friday/Saturday), other than those in the 3-Hour Reference section.

You can borrow up to 2 items at a time and are welcome to place bookings on copies up to 21 days in advance through Primo. Just remember to collect your reservation by 3.30pm, or your booking will lapse.

Don’t forget! With high demand comes high fine rates – make sure to return your Heavy Demand books on time to avoid the 75p hourly fine per item.

In the Heavy Demand area you can use the self-service kiosks to pay fines, borrow and return books all in one place! Always check your receipt when borrowing before 10.30am, as pre-booked items may be due back the same day.

Our DVD collection is also located here – these are mainly 3-day loans although a small number are Heavy Demand.

Did you know…? – The Teaching Resource Collection

Did you know about the Teaching Resource Collection (TRC) on Floor 6 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library? The collection contains resources for our Education students to use for preparation and whilst on teaching placements.

There is a wide selection of resources including children’s books, school textbooks, kits, posters, big books and DVDs. Favourites, among many others, include the Gruffalo storysack, the Magnetism compendium kit and books by Roald Dahl.

Group discussion is allowed in this room and there are 3 small group tables. No need to book!

If you would like any help using the TRC, please ask Floor 6 staff (currently Jenna, Elaine and our Information Consultant for Education, Claire Molloy).

Noise in the Library: how to let us know if you are being disturbed

We ask all users of The Sir Duncan Rice Library to be considerate to others studying. Exams can be a time of stress so, please think of other library users as you revise and while you move around the building. As you walk out of the library, remember that people sat in their seats are still working.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library provides a range of spaces for different types of use, from completely silent to more informal group working areas. In general, the library gets quieter as you move up the floors, with floor 7 being the quietest. It is also noisier near the lifts but gets quieter as you move across to the south side of the building.

During this important time, we try to ensure that a quiet, safe and clean study environment is in place for all users.  Please remember that if you are being disturbed by others using the library, you can speak to library staff. You can find us in the offices and information points of Floors 1-6 Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00. All other times speak with members of staff at the Information Centre on Floor 1 and on the Welcome Desk.
